JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – U.S. Route 90 across North Florida will become the course for a multi-marathon event through which Jacksonville attorney Mike Freed of Gunster and 19 point-to-point relay teams will raise funds Dec. 2-7 for Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) and the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership (NFMLP). Freed will run all six marathons, and each relay team will run one alongside him.
Each team seeks to raise at least $10,000 for a JALA endowment to fund civil legal aid to pediatric patients and their families in Northeast Florida. The Tallahassee-to-Jacksonville event, Freed to Run 2.0, is the follow-up to last year’s inaugural Freed to Run, in which Freed alone ran the 157 miles from the Florida Supreme Court to the Duval County Courthouse, single-handedly raising nearly $70,000 for JALA. Baptist Health is matching all donations to the endowment at 125% up to $1.25 million over the next five years. If the Freed to Run 2.0 teams reach their $180,000 goal for 2018, the event will generate more than $400,000 for the endowment with Baptist Health’s match.
The event will conclude with a 5k ending at the Duval County Courthouse, where a Finish Line Celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 7. More information is at www.jaxlegalaid.org/freedtorun/.
